Pr. prof. Ion Ciungu
"Nearly 1.5
million pilgrims have visited Egypt's Dronka Monastery on Mount Assiut this
month to observe the annual Fast of the Virgin Mary, which traditionally runs
from August 7 to 21.
The celebration drew
worshippers to the monastery’s Cave Church, where Christian tradition holds
that the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph and
the infant Jesus sheltered for an extended period during their flight into
Egypt. The monastery is also traditionally regarded as the final stop of the
journey, from where the Holy Family began its return to the Holy Land.
Bishop Anab Yoannis,
the Coptic Orthodox Bishop of Assiut, said pilgrims had travelled from as far
as Ethiopia, Eritrea and Sudan.
