Patriarhia Latină a Ierusalimului și Custodia Țării Sfinte au descris incidentul drept un „precedent grav”, menționând că este prima dată în secole când conducătorii Bisericii sunt împiedicați să participe la această celebrare specifică. Patriarhia a numit decizia „în mod evident nerezonabilă și extrem de disproporționată”, argumentând că aceasta încalcă status quo-ul și libertatea de cult. Incidentul a atras critici din partea liderilor mondiali, inclusiv din partea ambasadorului SUA în Israel, precum și condamnări din partea liderilor Italiei și Franței. Prim-ministra Italiei, Giorgia Meloni, a criticat acțiunea poliției, iar ministrul de externe, Antonio Tajani, a declarat pe rețelele de socializare că îl va convoca pe ambasadorul Israelului cu privire la incident. Președintele Franței, Emmanuel Macron, a condamnat decizia poliției israeliene, despre care a spus că „se adaugă la creșterea îngrijorătoare a încălcărilor statutului Locurilor Sfinte din Ierusalim”. Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa also presided over the Veneration of the Holy Cross within the sacred precincts of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. In a striking and somber departure from tradition, the faithful were absent, kept away by restrictions imposed by Israeli police in light of the ongoing war. Although Israel had earlier prevented the Latin Patriarch from celebrating Palm Sunday at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the ban was later reversed following an international outcry. The Cardinal blessed the entire world with a fragment of the True Cross—the original wood on which Christ was crucified. According to tradition, it was discovered in Jerusalem by Saint Helena in the fourth century.
