Golgotha:
Where the Blood of Christ Touched the Skull of Adam
Why is the place where Jesus was crucified called
Golgotha—“the Place of the Skull”?
Beyond the idea that the hill looked like a skull, an
ancient Christian tradition gives a deeper meaning. Early Church Fathers such
as Origen and Epiphanius of Salamis recorded a belief that Adam, the first man,
was buried at Golgotha.
According to this tradition, Adam’s skull lay beneath
the very hill where Jesus was crucified.
When Christ died and the earth shook
⚜ (Matthew 27:51), the rock split open. Tradition says
the precious blood of Jesus flowed down from the cross and touched the skull of
Adam.
This powerful image shows the mystery of redemption:
The first Adam brought sin and death into the world.
Jesus, the “Second Adam,” brought forgiveness and new
life.
As Scripture declares:
☦ “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” — 1
Corinthians 15:22
That is why many Christian icons and crucifixes show a
skull at the foot of the cross—a reminder that Christ’s sacrifice redeems
humanity from the very beginning.
From the Garden of Eden to the hill of Golgotha, God’s
plan of salvation points to Jesus our Redeemer.
✝️ The place of the skull became the place of salvation."
